Mont-Saint-Michel in the rain: what changes
The abbey can be visited in any weather, but everything else is outdoors: the walkway from the car park, the climb up the Grande Rue, and the abbey’s stairs and terraces.
Wind: the bay is often windy, and even more so at the top. Bring a windproof jacket.
Stairs and paving: slippery in the rain, so wear shoes with good grip.
Refunds: the entry ticket isn’t refunded for rain; the Paris day trip can be cancelled for free up to 24 hours before.
Queues and crowds
In 2025 the Mont welcomed about 2.79 million visitors, and the abbey 1.62 million.
On peak days (May weekends, July and August) it reaches 30,000 people a day and the Grande Rue becomes one long queue.
The Mont itself asks visitors to arrive before 10 am or after 4 pm; in high summer, before 9 am or after 6 pm is even better.
Abbey tickets don’t have a time slot: you can go up whenever you like, until one hour before closing.
An hour-by-hour crowd estimate is coming later, always marked as an estimate and with its source.
What to see inside Mont-Saint-Michel
The cloister of the Mont-Saint-Michel abbey
The abbey church: at the top of the Mont, with the golden statue of Saint Michael on the spire.
La Merveille: the 13th-century Gothic complex on the north side, with the cloister, the refectory, the Knights’ Hall and the Guests’ Hall.
The west terrace: the widest view over the bay and the tides.
The crypts and the great wheel: the wooden treadwheel used to haul loads when the abbey was a prison.
The village and ramparts: the narrow, steep Grande Rue and the walk along the walls, with the best views of the bay.
The history of Mont-Saint-Michel
708: according to tradition, the Archangel Michael appears to Bishop Aubert of Avranches, who builds a first sanctuary on the Mont.
966: Benedictine monks arrive and found the abbey.
13th century: La Merveille is built, a Gothic masterpiece.
Hundred Years’ War: the Mont holds out against English sieges and becomes a national symbol.
After the Revolution: the abbey becomes a prison, until 1863.
1979: the Mont and its bay become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Useful tips for your visit
Avoid peak hours: arrive before 10 am or after 4 pm, as the Mont itself recommends.
How long you need: an hour and a half for the abbey; half a day with the village, the ramparts and the trip from the car park.
Stairs: lots of them, and access is very difficult for people with reduced mobility. Strollers must be folded inside the abbey.
With kids: under-18s go free (with their family), and the Revelacio tablet has a children’s route.
ID: if you rent the Revelacio tablet, you leave an ID card as a deposit.
Don’t cross the bay on your own: quicksand and fast-rising tides are dangerous. Walks across the bay should only be done with an authorised guide.
Getting to Mont-Saint-Michel
By car: you can’t drive onto the Mont. Park in the large paid car parks on the mainland, which can be booked online from 2026, and take the frequent free shuttles from there. On foot, it’s 45–60 minutes from the car park to the Mont.
By train and bus: the nearest station is Pontorson, linked to the Mont by bus. Keolis Armor also runs buses from Rennes and Saint-Malo.
From Paris: by public transport you need a train plus a bus. A one-day organised trip is the easiest option.
Tides: during the big tides the Mont becomes an island again, a sight worth seeing. Check the tide times on the Mont’s official website before you go.
