Castel Sant’Angelo in the rain: what changes
Much of the visit is indoors: the Roman spiral ramp, the halls and the papal apartments.
Outdoors: the courtyards, the walkways and the Terrace of the Angel, the highlight of the visit.
Views: in bad weather you partly lose the view over St Peter’s and the rooftops of Rome.
No cloakroom: the castle has no cloakroom, so leave big umbrellas and bulky bags behind.
Queues and crowds
The Ministry recommends booking, especially at weekends and on public holidays.
On free-entry Sundays you can’t book: you queue at the ticket office.
Last entry: 6:30 pm, an hour before closing.
An hour-by-hour crowd estimate is coming later, always marked as an estimate and with its source.
