Castel del Monte tickets: which one to choose

The ticket is cheap and the visit is short: the rooms are bare, so an explanation makes all the difference.

  • Official ticket – €10 (reduced €2 for ages 18–25; free under 18 and on the first Sunday of the month). Buy it at the official online ticket office with an entry time, or at the ticket desk. With an online ticket you must arrive at exactly the time you chose.
  • Guided tour with entry on GetYourGuide – from €20. Ticket included and about an hour with a guide. Note: it’s non-refundable, and with few participants the tour may run in English and Italian together.

Our pick: the guided tour. Castel del Monte fascinates because of its shape and the theories about its meaning, which are hard to grasp without a guide. If your dates aren’t fixed, or you want to spend as little as possible, get the official ticket: it’s €10 and there’s an audio guide on site.

Free entry: on the first Sunday of every month and on 4 November 2026.

Open every day, with seasonal hours. Today (26 October 2026) it’s open 9 am–5:30 pm, ticket desk until 5 pm. In summer the Ministry lists 10 am–6:45 pm, ticket desk until 6 pm. Check the day’s hours at the official ticket office.

  • Summer: highs in Bari top 30°C; the hill is a little breezier, but there’s little shade around the castle.
  • Winter: mild on the coast, colder and windier up on the hill.

1991–2020 normals for Bari airport, about 50 km away: average high and days with at least 1 mm of rain. The castle sits on a hill over 500 metres up, where it’s a few degrees cooler. Source: NOAA, table published on Wikipedia (article “Bari”).

Castel del Monte in the rain: what changes

Almost the whole visit is indoors: the sixteen rooms on two floors and the towers.

  • Outdoors: the octagonal courtyard and the short walk from the car park to the entrance.
  • Wind: the castle stands on an isolated hilltop and is very exposed, even in summer.
  • Note: the GetYourGuide tour can’t be refunded; if the weather looks uncertain, consider the official ticket.

Queues and crowds

  • Spring and summer weekends and the first Sunday of the month, when entry is free, are the busiest times.
  • Groups are limited to 30 people.
  • With an online ticket you choose your entry time and skip the ticket-desk queue.

An hour-by-hour crowd estimate is coming later, always marked as an estimate and with its source.

What to see inside Castel del Monte

The octagonal courtyard seen from below
The octagonal courtyard seen from below

The visit takes about an hour.

  • The octagonal plan: an octagon with eight octagonal towers at the corners, around an octagonal courtyard.
  • The sixteen rooms: eight per floor, all trapezoid-shaped, with keystones carved with faces, animals and leaves.
  • The materials: the contrast between limestone, coral breccia and marble.
  • The towers: some hold rainwater cisterns, others bathrooms with latrine and washbasin; in one stair tower, carved figures support the vault.
  • Surviving sculpture: a relief of a procession of knights and a fragment of mosaic in the eighth room on the ground floor.

The history of Castel del Monte

  • 1240: the first document about the castle dates from this year; it was commissioned by Emperor Frederick II.
  • Purpose: long debated. It lacks a moat and typical defences, so historians suggest a more symbolic, residential or ceremonial role.
  • 1996: it becomes a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Fun fact: it’s the castle shown on the Italian 1-cent euro coin.

Useful tips for your visit

  • Be on time: with an online ticket you must arrive at your chosen time.
  • Pets: small dogs and cats can enter in a carrier; for large dogs there’s a bookable dog-sitting service.
  • First Sunday of the month: free entry, but more crowds.
  • Make a day of it: Trani, with its seafront cathedral, is a classic to combine with the castle.
  • Water and a hat in summer: there’s little shade around the castle.

Getting to Castel del Monte

By car: the easiest option. The castle is 18 km from Andria, in the Alta Murgia National Park, and is also reachable from Bari, Trani and Barletta.

By public transport: connections are limited; without a car, an organised trip from Bari or Trani is the easier choice.

Accessibility: the raised floor can be reached by a platform lift (maximum load 210 kg).
