Miramare in the rain: what changes
The castle is visited indoors: Maximilian and Charlotte’s rooms, the Duke of Aosta’s apartments and the exhibition.
Outdoors: the 22-hectare park and the seafront walk, which lose a lot in the rain.
Wind: Trieste is the city of the bora wind; on very windy days the seaside park is very exposed.
Queues and crowds
In 2024 the castle had over 400,000 visitors, and the park more than a million entries.
Ticket office: closes at 6:30 pm, half an hour before the castle.
In summer and at weekends it’s best to arrive in the morning.
An hour-by-hour crowd estimate is coming later, always marked as an estimate and with its source.

The historic Kitchens and the Castelletto: by booking only.
The history of Miramare
1856–1860: Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, later Emperor of Mexico, builds the castle for himself and his wife Charlotte of Belgium.
1867: after Maximilian’s tragic death in Mexico, Miramare hosts only short stays by the Habsburgs.
1918–1929: after the First World War it passes to the Italian state and opens to the public in 1929.
From 1932: Prince Amedeo of Savoy-Aosta lives here for seven years and redecorates his apartments in the style of the time.
