Stirling Castle tickets: which one to choose

There’s one ticket and it covers the whole castle: the Royal Palace, Great Hall, kitchens, chapel and regimental museum.

  • Official ticket – £18.50 online (£20.50 on the door; 65+ £15, ages 7–15 £9). Buy it on the official Historic Environment Scotland website. Guided tours are included; the audio guide is extra.
  • Admission ticket on GetYourGuide – from €22. Entry on your chosen day, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
  • Small-group guided tour on Tiqets – from €63.20. A guide walks you through the Old Town and the castle, entry included.

Our pick: a standard entry ticket. The castle’s own guided tours are free with your ticket, so you don’t need to pay extra for a guide. If your dates are fixed, the official ticket is the cheapest; if you want free cancellation, go for GetYourGuide. Choose the Tiqets tour if you’d like the Old Town too, in a small group.

Stirling Castle in the rain: what changes

The main rooms are indoors: the Royal Palace, Great Hall, kitchens, chapel and regimental museum.

  • Outdoors: the ramparts, the three enclosures and the viewpoints, which are very exposed to the wind.
  • Surfaces: the main route is cobbled and uphill, slippery in the rain.
  • Cancellation: the GetYourGuide ticket can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, handy if the forecast gets worse.

Queues and crowds

  • With over 620,000 visitors in 2025 it’s busy, but much less crowded than Edinburgh Castle.
  • In summer, day trips from Edinburgh and Glasgow arrive mid-morning: it’s calmer at opening time.
  • Last entry: one hour before closing.

An hour-by-hour crowd estimate is coming later, always marked as an estimate and with its source.

What to see inside Stirling Castle

One of the Royal Palace rooms, furnished as in the 1500s

Allow about two to three hours.

  • The Royal Palace: James V’s apartments, recreated as they may have looked in the 1500s; Mary Queen of Scots spent her childhood here.
  • The Great Hall: the vast hall for royal banquets and celebrations.
  • The ramparts: with views over the town, the plain and the Highlands.
  • The Great Kitchens: where meals for the court were prepared.
  • The Chapel Royal and the Queen Anne Garden.
  • The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum: the regiment’s history (note: lots of stairs).

Secret Stirling: a 90-minute tour into areas usually closed to the public, at 11 am and 2 pm, to be booked in advance; not suitable for under-12s.

The history of Stirling Castle

  • 1540s: James V completes the Royal Palace, inspired by the European Renaissance.
  • 1543: the infant Mary is crowned Queen of Scots at the castle.
  • Today: it’s cared for by Historic Environment Scotland.

Useful tips for your visit

  • Free guided tours: included in your ticket; they start at the castle well, so ask for times on arrival.

  • Comfortable shoes: cobbles, slopes and narrow stairs.
