1991–2020 normals for the Pully (Lausanne) station, on the same shore of the lake about 20 km away: average high and days with at least 1 mm of rain. Source: MeteoSwiss, table published on Wikipedia (article “Lausanne”).
Chillon in the rain: what changes
Most of the visit is indoors: halls, underground vaults, towers and wall-walks.
Outdoors: the courtyards, whose cobbles get slippery when wet.
Rain: it rains 9–12 days a month on the lake, most often in May.
Queues and crowds
In 2025 the castle had about 422,000 visitors, its second-best year ever; three in four come from abroad.
The self-guided visit usually takes 1.5–2 hours.
Parking: spaces near the castle are few, so the train, bus or boat is easier.
An hour-by-hour crowd estimate is coming later, always marked as an estimate and with its source.
What to see inside Chillon
A leaded window in one of the castle rooms
The underground vaults: carved into the rock, with the prison where François Bonivard is said to have been held.
The great halls: the rooms of the Savoy and Bernese bailiff periods.
The keep: with its weapons room and battle soundscape.
The wall-walks: with views over the lake and the Alps.
The films: 8 short films of 3–4 minutes along the route, with touch screens and headphones.
The history of Chillon
Bronze Age: excavations show the islet was already occupied.
1150: first written mention of the castle, owned by the Counts of Savoy, who controlled the road between northern and southern Europe.
1536: the Bernese take the castle after a three-week siege and free Bonivard, held prisoner for six years.
1798: the Bernese period ends; the castle later passes to the Canton of Vaud, which still owns it.
1816: Lord Byron visits Chillon and writes “The Prisoner of Chillon”, which makes the castle famous around the world.
Useful tips for your visit
Pushchairs: not allowed on the visitor route; leave them in the cafeteria cloakroom and bring a baby carrier.

Lockers: free, in the cafeteria and the first courtyard.
Children: under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.
