2014–2026 averages for the Brașov weather station, about 30 km from the castle (Bran is higher and a little cooler): average high and rainy days. Source: table published on Wikipedia (article “Brașov”).
Bran in the rain: what changes
The visit is almost entirely indoors: rooms, narrow stairs and passages.
Outdoors: the walk up from the park to the castle and the inner courtyard.
Rain: May and June are the wettest months, with about 10–11 rainy days a month.
Queues and crowds
According to the castle, it welcomed over a million visitors in 2023.
The rooms are small and the stairs narrow: when it’s busy the route moves slowly.
On Mondays the castle only opens at noon: early mornings on other days are quieter.
An hour-by-hour crowd estimate is coming later, always marked as an estimate and with its source.
What to see inside Bran
The castle tower on its rock
Queen Marie’s rooms: the castle was one of her favourite homes after 1920.
The secret passage: a hidden staircase linking the first and third floors.
The inner courtyard: small and enclosed by the walls.
The Time Tunnel (separate ticket, 30 lei).
The Torture Rooms (separate ticket, 20 lei).
The history of Bran
1377: Louis I of Hungary grants the Saxons of Brașov the right to build a stone castle guarding the pass.
1920: the city of Brașov gives the castle to the royal family; Queen Marie makes it one of her favourite homes.
1948: the communist regime seizes the castle from the royal family.
2006–2009: the castle returns to Princess Ileana’s heirs and reopens as a private museum.
And Dracula? Bram Stoker never mentions Bran in the novel, and most historians agree Vlad the Impaler never lived there: the link was born out of tourism.
Useful tips for your visit
Narrow stairs: the route has many steps and tight passages, hard going with pushchairs or wheelchairs.
Children: under-5s go free.
Trip with Peleș: Peleș is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays; on those days the trip only shows it from outside.
Time: about an hour and a half for the castle, more with the paid exhibitions.
